What Is Commander Royale? A Territory-War Metagame for Your EDH Playgroup

July 5, 2026 · Commander Royale Team

If your Commander playgroup has ever finished a game night and thought "that was fun, but nothing we did tonight matters next week" — Commander Royale is built for you.

Commander Royale is a free metagame layer for Magic: The Gathering's Commander format. You keep playing the EDH games you already play, with the decks you already own. What changes is what those games mean: every win claims territory on a shared fantasy map, and every loss gives ground back. Over a season, your playgroup fights a persistent war for the map.

How it works

  1. Create a game and invite your playgroup. One person sets up a game in the lobby and shares the invite. Everyone joins on their own account — phones work fine at the table.
  2. Register your commanders. Add the decks you'll fight with, pulled straight from Scryfall's card database. No imports or proxies needed — just search your commander by name.
  3. Play Commander like you always do. Shuffle up and play a normal game of EDH in paper. Commander Royale doesn't simulate Magic; it records what happened at your table.
  4. Report the result, claim the ground. The winner takes territory from the players they defeated. Borders shift, supply lines get cut, and grudges get very, very real.
  5. Fight until someone rules the map. A season ends when one commander controls the world — or when your playgroup declares a truce and starts a new war.

Why add a metagame to Commander?

Commander is already the best multiplayer format in Magic. But casual playgroups run into the same problems: games blur together, there's no reason to vary decks, and the stakes never change. A territory war fixes all three.

  • Every game matters. A win isn't just a win — it's the hill fort your friends will spend three weeks trying to take back.
  • Politics get deeper. Commander is a political format. When the player across the table holds the territory you need, alliances at the table start reflecting the war on the map.
  • It creates stories. "Remember when your goblins held the mountain pass for an entire month?" is the kind of thing playgroups talk about for years.

What you need to get started

  • A Commander playgroup (3–6 players works best)
  • Your existing EDH decks — any power level, since you're playing against the same people you always play
  • A free Commander Royale account

That's it. There's nothing to install and nothing to buy. If you want to see what a war in progress looks like first, the live map demo shows an active game — territories, battle history and all.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work for any Commander variant? Yes. Standard multiplayer EDH, 1v1 duels, Two-Headed Giant — if your table can decide who won, the map can record it.

What if our playgroup plays at different power levels? The map doesn't care whether you won with cEDH combo or a precon. Territory rewards winning your table, whatever your table looks like.

How long does a season take? That's up to your group. Most maps take a few months of weekly game nights to conquer outright — about the length of a good campaign.
