How Commander Royale Started

July 15, 2026 · Commander Royale Team

Hey everyone, I am relitively new to commander and have been playing commander with my pod for a few years now. At the start of the year one of my pod matest shoots the group chat this (https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTrqbqJC9/) and the condept looked really fun. It would help insentivise and explore new decks and to throw in some extra spidce into our weekly games. So I decited to use thebrokenrealms post as insporation and make an online map that we could use to capture territores and track our games. After many months of itterating, testing, squashing bugs, and salty games Commander Royale was born.

So I took that idea and ran with it. I started building an online map my pod could use to capture territory and track our games against each other. What followed was months of iterating, testing, squashing bugs, and more than a few salty game nights as we played through the early versions ourselves. That process is how Commander Royale was born.

How it works

Commander Royale has two main modes:

  • Commander mode — built for smaller playgroups (2-4 players), where individual commanders capture territory.
  • Conqueror mode — built for bigger groups, where players split into teams and capture territory together.

Capturing territory is simple: play a normal game of Commander. Win, or knock out a player, and you earn points. Our pod uses 1 point per kill and 1 additional point for the win. Points convert directly into territory captured. Beyond that baseline, the exact flow is up to your playgroup; there's no single "correct" way to run a season.

Where it stands now

Commander Royale is free and still in beta. It started as a hobby project to solve a problem my own pod had, and it's grown into something I'm excited to keep building. If you try it with your table, I'd genuinely like to hear what worked, what didn't, and what would make it better, feedback from real playgroups is what's shaping where this goes next.
